Vienna Food Prices Drop Nearly 10% in 2026 Audit

A Vienna Chamber of Labour study shows basic food costs fell to 74 euros following a VAT reduction and significant drops in staple prices.

The Vienna Chamber of Labour's September 2026 price test reveals a nearly ten percent drop in basic food costs. A basket of 40 essential items totaled 74 euros, down from 82 euros in 2025. Shoppers across seven retail chains saw significant price relief.

Key drivers include a July 1 VAT reduction from ten to 4.9 percent. Tea butter prices fell 37 percent, while pasta and Gouda dropped 19 and 14 percent respectively. However, table vinegar rose 29 percent, and branded goods averaged a 5.3 percent increase.

Market dynamics show supermarkets remain eleven percent more expensive than discounters. While staples like apples and mineral water are cheaper, costs for potatoes, eggs, and coffee have climbed. The audit covered 21 Vienna locations and major online shops.
