Starting October 1, companies in Austria can offer digital invoices via email or mobile apps, according to a Wednesday statement from Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ). While digital options are voluntary, the legal obligation to issue a receipt remains.
Businesses may still provide paper invoices, and they must issue a physical copy if a customer requests one. Companies are responsible for ensuring that every customer receives their receipt in either format, as the Office for Combating Fraud begins monitoring.
The initiative aims to reduce waste, as estimates show 1,500 kilometers of invoices are printed daily. To prevent tax fraud, the financial police will conduct focused controls on cash-intensive industries to ensure all digital and paper transactions are logged.
