Austrian Airlines Fleet Expansion Faces Uncertainty

Rising state fees and financial losses threaten Austrian Airlines' plan to add five new Boeing 787 Dreamliners to its fleet by 2029.

Austrian Airlines, a Lufthansa Group subsidiary, faces uncertainty regarding its long-haul fleet expansion. While the carrier began replacing Boeing 767 and 777 jets with 787 Dreamliners in 2024, the delivery of five new aircraft by 2029 is now in question.

CEO Annette Mann notes rising costs as state-related aviation fees in Austria surged 85% since 2019, far exceeding the European average. With a 12-euro flight tax, AUA recorded a 93-million-euro loss in early 2026 despite earning just five euros per passenger.

The fleet renewal is vital for growth, as each long-haul jet supports 350 jobs and 37 million euros in wages. Industry leaders now urge a tax reduction to eight euros to maintain competitiveness against airports like Bratislava and secure future expansion plans.
