The Austrian Armed Forces and Austrian Airlines launched a joint pilot project on September 28, 2026. Two military pilots, one helicopter and one jet specialist, began Airbus A320 type rating training to serve both organizations in a new sharing model.
The initiative aims to retain experienced military personnel for an additional ten years beyond their eight-year commitment. Under the plan, pilots will serve the military from November to April and fly for Austrian Airlines during the peak summer season.
This cooperation addresses personnel shortages at Austrian Airlines while maintaining military readiness. Following training completion in 2027, the dual-employment model will fully commence in 2028, with a formal evaluation scheduled after the first year.
