Austrian Retail Wage Negotiations Reach Impasse

Austrian unions and employers clash over a 3.8 percent pay rise demand as the retail sector faces weak productivity and high inflation.

The Austrian retail sector, which employs over 420,000 people and serves as a major employer for women, is facing stalled collective bargaining. Unions initially demanded a 3.8 percent salary increase, a proposal that employers have officially rejected.

head Holger Bonin notes that productivity in the sector has been weak for years due to online competition and shifting consumer habits. He suggests that the health and leisure industries currently offer better future prospects than the retail market.

Bonin also addressed high inflation, citing automatic rent adjustments and an ' surcharge' on products. He advocates for increasing housing supply and providing targeted support for low-income households rather than implementing broad price brakes.
