Innsbruck Reports Rise in Legionella Infections

City officials investigate infection sources and implement safety measures following an increase in Legionella cases across Innsbruck.

Innsbruck has recorded a higher number of Legionella infections in 2026 compared to 2025, prompting immediate action from city and state officials. Mayor Johannes Anzengruber confirmed that authorities are currently investigating potential infection sources.

Ulrich Schweigmann, head of the Office for Health, Markets, and Veterinary Affairs, noted that samples were taken from technical sources. Facilities identified as risks are undergoing cleaning, while nursing homes have implemented specific resident protections.

While swallowing drinking water is safe as stomach acid kills the bacteria, aerosolized water poses a risk. Officials recommend flushing pipes regularly and running hot water at 60 degrees Celsius after long periods of non-use to ensure safety across the city.
