Uniko Proposes Ending Latin Entry Requirements

The Universities Conference recommends removing Latin as a prerequisite for 50 fields, including Law and Medicine, to modernize admissions.

The Universities Conference, or Uniko, has officially recommended the removal of Latin as an admission requirement for approximately 50 fields of study. This proposal was sent to Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr to modernize university entry rules.

Under the new plan, Latin would no longer be required for Law, Medicine, Protestant Theology, or most teacher training subjects. However, Uniko advocates for maintaining the requirement for specific majors like Philosophy, History, Art History, and Catholic Theology.

Uniko head Brigitte Hütter noted that students often delay Latin exams until graduation, yet course material remains manageable without it. Removing these barriers aims to streamline academic progress while keeping the language for essential historical fields.
