Starting October 1, e-mopeds are officially prohibited from using bike paths and must travel exclusively on the roadway. Mobility Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) confirmed that vehicles classified as motor vehicles are banned from cycling lanes as of Wednesday.
Under the new regulations, e-moped operators must possess a valid driving license and wear a helmet. Additionally, these vehicles must be registered for road traffic, display a license plate, and carry mandatory motor vehicle liability insurance at all times.
The rules affect an estimated 5,000 e-scooters and fatbikes in Vienna. In response, Foodora will switch its fleet to bicycles and e-bikes, offering drivers installment payment plans to help them purchase new equipment and comply with the updated standards.
