Vienna Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky of the SPÖ has signed the Greenpeace declaration for a gas phase-out in cities. He is the first representative of a European capital to join the initiative, signaling a major shift in urban energy policy.
The city aims to transition its entire heat supply to renewable energies by 2040 through the 'Raus aus Gas' program. Czernohorszky highlighted that heat pumps will play a vital role, as the technology provides efficient solutions for heating and cooling.
Greenpeace Austria Managing Director Alexander Egit welcomed the move as Vienna seeks further federal legislative adjustments. The city’s commitment to ending gas reliance serves as a critical model for other major European metropolitan areas by 2040.
