Vienna S-Bahn Main Line Closes for Renovation

The S-Bahn main line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed until October 2027, with increased transit frequencies now in effect.

The S-Bahn main line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is now closed for a 14-month renovation period, with no trains running on this section until October 2027. A shuttle bus service has been established between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse stations.

To manage the closure, Wiener Linien and ÖBB increased frequencies on several lines starting September 7. The U1 now runs every 2:20 minutes, while the U6 runs every 2:40. Tram line 18 was extended to Stadion, and line 62 was rerouted to Quartier Belvedere.

Additional measures include a new traffic light program at Landstraßer Gürtel to assist line O and the extension of bus line 2A to Augarten. These changes, developed with the Austrian Institute for Spatial Planning, aim to maintain transit stability through 2027.
