Starting November 10, the Salztorbrücke in Vienna will be closed to all cars and trucks. The bridge, which crosses the Danube Canal to connect the first and second districts between Salztorgasse and Hollandstraße, will remain open for pedestrians and buses.
The MA 29 bridge department, led by Wolfgang Strenn, manages this prestressed concrete structure. Opened in 1961, the bridge stands at a site with history dating to the 19th century, following a previous crossing destroyed by German troops back in 1945.
This closure marks a significant shift for local traffic as the city prepares for future infrastructure changes. The current Salztorbrücke is scheduled to be demolished and completely rebuilt starting in 2028 to ensure long-term safety and connectivity.
