Vienna to Redesign Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz

Vienna's Josefstadt district will unseal 2,600 square meters of concrete to create a greener, climate-resilient square by summer 2027.

's district will redesign Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz by summer 2027. The project, located where Josefstädter Straße, Albertgasse, and Skodagasse meet near Café Hummel, involves unsealing 2,600 square meters of concrete to improve the area.

The 4.2 million euro initiative replaces asphalt with light-colored, water-storing paving. Plans include 560 square meters of green space, 15 new trees, and green beds. Traffic changes involve a new two-way bike path and making Albertgasse one-way for cars.

Funded by the district, city, and federal government, the redesign follows a resident survey. While tram lines 5 and 12 remain, the Albertgasse stop will move 20 meters and become barrier-free, enhancing accessibility and local climate resilience by 2027.
