Vienna to Restrict E-Scooters on Public Transit

Starting September 2026, Vienna will ban e-scooters on buses and trams while limiting subway access to off-peak hours to improve flow.

Starting September 1, 2026, will implement new regulations for e-scooters on public transit. The transport of e-scooters and other electric vehicles will be generally prohibited on all buses and trams, while subway access will face new restrictions.

E-scooters are allowed in subways on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and after 6:30 PM. Full access remains on weekends and holidays. Folded non-electric scooters are exempt, but riding any scooter on platforms remains a punishable offense for all users.

City Councilor Ulli Sima noted that analyses found e-scooters hinder passenger flow and disrupt space in crowded vehicles. Violators of these new transport rules face a 50-euro fine as the city prioritizes efficiency during peak travel hours.
