Austria to Launch Fast-Track AHS for Gifted Pupils

Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr announces a new three-year lower secondary program for high-performing students starting in 2027.

Austria is introducing a new special form of Academic Secondary School (AHS) for highly gifted students, scheduled to launch in autumn 2027. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) plans to integrate this model into the regular school system.

The program allows students with high performance potential to complete lower secondary level in three years. These special classes will be hosted at existing schools, following a curriculum that leads to the standard Matura school-leaving examination.

Four locations are planned by 2030 under a draft law open for review until November 4. Students who struggle may transfer to regular classes, as repeating grades is prohibited except for cases involving illness, accidents, or other force majeure events.
