Kickl Announces FPÖ Referendum to Abolish ORF Fees

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl plans a September 2026 referendum to end compulsory ORF fees and reform the public broadcaster's mandate.

leader announced a major referendum during an interview on oe24.tv this Wednesday. Scheduled for introduction in September 2026, the initiative demands the abolition of compulsory fees, clean information, and a focused Austrian program.

Kickl defined clean information as a precisely regulated public service mandate. The party also filed a complaint with KommAustria regarding Clemens Pig's June 2026 appointment as Director General, following the 2025 ORF-Haushaltsabgabe NEIN referendum.

That previous effort by Robert Marschall secured 119,368 signatures, surpassing the 100,000-vote threshold required for National Council discussion. This new FPÖ move intensifies the ongoing political debate over the broadcaster's funding and leadership.
