A new memorial site featuring 2,848 metal nameplates has been established at the Landesklinikum Mauer in the Amstetten district. Designed by artist Azra Akšamija, the site honors patients murdered during the Nazi regime or transported to killing centers.
The memorial consists of two walls bordering a meadow where hundreds of victims are buried. These metal plates vibrate and produce sound from highway traffic noise. Pavilion 18 now serves as a place of learning, utilizing various contemporary testimonies.
Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and Medical Director Christian Korbel attended the opening, where historian Stephan Roth spoke. This site commemorates victims like Maria Bauer, marking the professional processing of these WWII events that began in the 2010s.
