School Path Accidents Rise Sharply in Austria

Statistik Austria reports 537 school path accidents in 2025, prompting calls for lower speed limits and supervised group travel for kids.

Statistik Austria data reveals a sharp rise in school path accidents, with 537 incidents recorded in 2025. This represents an increase of 118 cases compared to the previous year. The accidents resulted in 577 injuries, including 72 children seriously hurt.

The report highlights a fatal incident in Tyrol where one child died while traveling to school. Safety expert Klara Maria Schenk of the VCÖ emphasizes the growing risks facing students. The organization analyzed these figures to identify critical safety gaps.

To improve safety, the VCÖ advocates for reducing speed limits from 50 km/h to 30 km/h near schools and residential areas. They also propose Pedi-buses and Bici-buses, where adults accompany groups of children traveling to school on foot or by bicycle.
