St. Pölten Council Moves to Regulate E-Scooters

St. Pölten officials seek provincial law changes to regulate or ban e-scooters in the city center following a pedestrian injury incident.

During a municipal council meeting in on Monday, all political parties reached a consensus regarding e-scooter regulations in the city center. The discussion followed a serious incident where a young girl was injured after being hit by a scooter.

FPÖ members Martin Antauer and Klaus Otzelberger introduced an urgent motion for a total ban, supported by ÖVP Vice Mayor Florian Krumböck. However, SPÖ Vice Mayor Michael Kögl noted that current laws equate e-scooters with bicycles, complicating a direct ban.

The council agreed to pass a resolution seeking a change in provincial law, with details to be finalized in upcoming transport committees. While Wiener Neustadt already has a ban, St. Pölten officials aim to address legal hurdles to ensure public safety.
