Vienna Students Protest for Higher University Budget

University members blocked the Vienna Ring road to demand increased funding and protest projected billion-euro savings in the federal budget.

Students and university members gathered in Vienna on Tuesday to protest for a higher university budget. Organized by the Austrian Students' Union and the Universities Conference, the demonstration blocked the Vienna Ring road from 15:00 to 18:00 for lectures.

The protest, involving 19 of 22 public universities, featured political speeches and action stations like a 'Budgetloch-Kegelbahn'. The Universities Conference fears one billion euros in savings for 2028-2030 based on figures in the federal double budget.

Government leaders will discuss university financing at a meeting later this week. Science Minister Eva Maria Holzleitner noted the budget sum must be fixed by the end of October, with potential dates for a final decision set for October 16 or 17 at a retreat.
