Austria's tourism sector saw a 1.5 percent increase in overnight bookings from January to August 2026, reaching 117.9 million stays. Preliminary data from Statistik Austria, released September 25, shows the summer season alone grew by 2.3 percent since May.
Foreign visitors accounted for approximately three-quarters of all stays this year. Travelers from Germany and Austria provided the highest booking volumes, while the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein remained key foreign markets.
State Secretary for Tourism Elisabeth Zehetner of the ÖVP noted the results as August numbers stagnated. The national tourism strategy through 2035 continues to prioritize value creation, appreciation, and long-term preservation for the domestic industry.
