Starting October 1, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) contracts for sharing self-generated electricity become legally possible. This model allows two or more actors to join via contractual agreements to share power without forming a separate legal entity like a community.
Participants must have a smart meter and an existing supply agreement. While profit motives are permitted, the model is currently limited to users within the same network operator. Billing is managed directly or through a third-party service provider.
SPÖ energy spokesperson Alois Schroll notes that nationwide sharing is expected by April 2027. Reduced network fees, currently for energy communities, may apply to P2P models starting January 2027, depending on the physical distance between participants.
