Austria to Test 8,000 Emergency Sirens Saturday

Vienna will trigger 180 sirens on October 3 for Civil Protection Day to test emergency signals and ensure technical network readiness.

Austria will observe Civil Protection Day on Saturday, October 3, by triggering more than 8,000 sirens nationwide. In Vienna, 180 sirens are scheduled to sound between 12:00 PM and 12:45 PM to test four specific signals: Sirenenprobe, Warnung, Alarm, and Entwarnung.

The Sirenenprobe starts with a 15-second tone, followed by a 3-minute Warnung tone. A 1-minute wailing Alarm signal and a 1-minute Entwarnung tone complete the test. Additional warning channels in Vienna will also be tested between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM today.

This annual exercise ensures technical functionality and familiarizes the population with emergency signals. While silent alarms maintain readiness year-round, city departments use this event to monitor the audibility and condition of the physical siren network.
