The ÖBB has officially launched the expansion of the Hietzing Verbindungsbahn with a groundbreaking ceremony this Friday. The project modernizes the line between Hütteldorf and Meidling, featuring three new stops and an 800-meter elevated track section.
The Federal Administrative Court approved the expansion, which includes removing level crossings at Auhofstraße and Hietzinger Hauptstraße. New underpasses and noise protection are planned, while the S80 will eventually run at 15-minute intervals by 2036.
District Chairwoman Johanna Zinkl notes the S80 service is suspended until late 2027. A replacement bus service operates every 15 minutes during weekday peaks to assist commuters until the new Hietzinger Hauptstraße stop opens at the end of 2029.
